From the Middle Ages to today: the history of Schloss Loosdorf

Contents3 sections

Built as a fortress, destroyed and rebuilt: Schloss Loosdorf bears the traces of many eras. A short tour through its history.

Getting married at Schloss Loosdorf means celebrating in a place with a long history. The castle was first built as a fortress in the Middle Ages. It has seen many eras since, and each one has left its mark.

Destruction and reconstruction

The history of the castle is marked by destruction and reconstruction, above all during the Hussite Wars, the Thirty Years' War and the Second World War. During the Thirty Years' War, a great fire destroyed large parts of the castle. It owes its present form to the Princes of Liechtenstein.

Four eras under one roof

On a tour, you can discover the features of different cultural eras: the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque and Classicism. Vaults, stucco ceilings, halls and salons each tell their part of the story.

In 1834 the Piatti family acquired the castle. Today Gabriel and Kalina Piatti run the house and preserve its historical and cultural heritage.

The Broken Collection

A special part of this heritage is the Broken Collection: a porcelain and shard collection that is unique in the world and includes Japanese cultural heritage. Selected pieces were restored by Japanese specialists and at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The collection can be seen in the castle's private museum.

For your celebration, this means you are not celebrating in a stage set but in a house with a history that is still lived in and cared for today.
